Activity:
Absolutely!
Posted on Nov 15, 2007
Topic: Linear Inequalities
In this activity, students will solve linear absolute value equations in a single variable and use their graphing calculator to verify solutions. Next, students will write absolute value inequalities as compound inequalities. Finally, students will solve absolute value inequalities.

Activity Key Steps:
Page 1.8 shows an example of storing a value for the variable and then evaluating the original equation to see if it is true or false. Help students repeat this process to check the solutions x = 6 and x = –4 in the equation |x – 1| = 5.
In this problem, students practice writing absolute value inequalities as compound inequalities.
Have students draw a vertical line at x = 1. All of the points on the upper graph are less than 3 units away from the vertical line. All of the points on the lower graph are more than 3 units away from the line.
Then students will connect the absolute value inequalities with compound inequalities.
