Algebra I
Activity:
Trains in Motion
Posted on Oct 9, 2008
Topic: Linear Equations & Functions
In this activity, students will make observation about the motion of two objects. They will compare and contrast this motion and consider how it corresponds to a graph representing the distance as a function of time. Students will explore the relationship between the slope and the rate.

Activity Key Steps:
In this activity, students will make observations about the motion of two objects, determining speed, distance, and point of intersection. In this case, the dots represent two trains leaving the same train station. They will compare and contrast this motion and consider how it corresponds to a graph representing the distance as a function of time.
In the extension, students will explore the relationship between the slope and the rate by changing the value of the rate, r, with a minimized slider. Then they will use a Movable line to find the equation that represents the relationship between distance and time.
