Activity Key Steps:

The concepts of permutations and combinations are presented, along with a variety of scenarios to be discussed. Factorials and arrangements of objects in which the set is “exhausted” are offered to students. The activity includes students drawing the several shapes in the possible orders.

Self-check questions accompany brief questions about a horse race in order to assess students’ level of understanding.

A combination lock is examined to find out whether the ‘combinations’ for a lock are actually combinations.

As an extension, students will create a tree diagram to give them a way to visualize permutations.
