Posted on May 28, 2009

Topic: Transformational Geometry

Activity Key Steps:

Students use the Lists & Spreadsheets app to enter values that gives the x- and y-values for a figure that is being rotated and reflected about the y-axis.

They enter = –list1 and = –list2 in the formula bar of Column C to create list3, the opposite of each of the x-values in list1. Then do a similar process for the y-values in list2.

Students create a scatter plot with connected points using the combinations of lists. For each combination, students determine what type of reflection or rotation occurred.

Problem 3 allows students to translate a figure by manipulating formulas to translate the x- and y-values.

Students also explore dilations. They continue using Lists & Spreadsheets to manipulate data points. They then graph the data and observe the result.

At the end of this activity, students will be able to perform reflections, rotations, translations and dilations using lists and scatter plots to represent figures on a coordinate plane.
