Activity Key Steps:

Visit MathNspired.com for additional Action Consequence activities and information.

In the first part of the activity, students generate samples from a population for a particular hypothesis test and observe that most of the sample means fall in the rejection region. This leads to the conjecture that the null hypothesis is actually false.

Then, students examine repeated samples to observe the relative frequency of “reject the null” conclusions—that is, power—as conditions change.

At the end of the activity, by manipulating the sample size, the true population mean, and alpha, students recognize how each of these is related to power. As a result, students will learn about the concept of power and relate the value of power to alpha and beta.
